Church of Saint Oswald, King and Martyr, Oswaldkirk

The Church of Saint Oswald stands in Oswaldkirk, a small village in North Yorkshire. It sits along the main road through the village, 2.4 kilometres east of Ampleforth Abbey. Over nine centuries old, it is the oldest building in the village by more than six hundred years. The church is dedicated to Saint Oswald, a 7th-century Christian king who spread the faith in Northumbria. It belongs to the Church of England and is part of a four-parish benefice. Since 1955, it has been a Grade II* listed building, recognised for its historical importance. The church’s history is visible in its stones. Fragments of a wooden Saxon church remain, including Celtic stonework carved around the year 1000. The southern entrance dates from the 12th century and shows Norman craftsmanship. Inside, a tomb believed to be that of Sir Richard Pickering, who died in 1441, lies under an arch in the southern wall. The church holds an unbroken list of rectors back to 1302, including John Dee, a mathematician and adviser to Queen Elizabeth I. In 1661, John Tillotson preached his first sermon here before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury. Visitors find a quiet place with centuries of detail. The nave has tall windows from the 1320s, some still holding fragments of medieval glass. Two bells from the 1680s hang in the tower, rung by ropes that reach the floor. The clock mechanism, made in 1898, drives faces on both sides of the tower. The east window shows Saint Oswald flanked by Saint Aidan and Saint Cuthbert, while the west window depicts Queen Victoria. The church uses an electric organ, and services take place weekly. A carol service on Christmas Eve brings together Anglican and Roman Catholic congregations.
