Holy Cross Church stands in the quiet village of Gilling East, North Yorkshire, serving a small parish that includes Gilling, Cawton, and Grimston. It is a Grade I listed building, recognised for its historical importance. The church has been known by different names over the centuries, including Saint Mary’s and Saint Helena’s. It forms part of a benefice with three other churches, all under the care of a single vicar. The building blends medieval and later features, with parts dating back to around 1200.

The church’s history is visible in its architecture. The oldest section is the arcade from about 1200, while the chancel was added in the early 1300s. The tower, built late in the 1400s, houses three bells installed in 1664, 1701, and 1773. A spiral staircase inside the tower leads to the bells and a clock installed in 1908, funded by Prince Ranjitsinhji through cricket matches. The organ chamber and east window were added during Victorian restorations in the 19th century.

Inside, visitors find the tomb of Sir Thomas Fairfax, a local landlord who died in 1828. The church’s interior includes the reticulated east window and the organ chamber. The tower’s clock faces east, halfway up, and the spiral staircase winds through the centre. The churchyard and surrounding village offer a peaceful setting, with views of the North Yorkshire countryside. The building remains a quiet but significant landmark in the area.
