Gilling Castle

Gilling Castle stands near Gilling East in North Yorkshire, a Grade I listed country house built on medieval foundations. Its oldest part is a 14th-century tower whose basement still forms the core of the present building. The house was remodelled in the 16th century by Sir William Fairfax, who added the Great Chamber and other Elizabethan features. Later, in the early 18th century, wings were added to enclose the west court. The castle passed from the Fairfax family in the 19th century and was bought by Ampleforth Abbey in 1929. The castle’s history is marked by the work of notable figures such as Thomas de Etton, who built the fortified manor, and Sir William Fairfax, who transformed the interior in the late 16th century. The Great Chamber, completed in 1585, is a masterpiece of Elizabethan craftsmanship, filled with heraldic decorations and intricate woodwork. The room’s oak panelling, plaster ceiling, and stained glass windows were designed to display the Fairfax family’s connections and Yorkshire alliances. Flemish artist Bernard Dininckoff contributed the finest glasswork, including his self-portrait and the date 1585. Visitors to Gilling Castle find the Great Chamber, one of the finest surviving Elizabethan interiors in England. The room’s oak panelling is divided into nearly a hundred lozenges, each filled with unique geometric patterns and flowers. The chimneypiece displays the Fairfax arms, while the frieze above shows the coats of arms of Yorkshire gentlemen arranged by Wapentake. The stained glass windows tell the stories of the Fairfax, Stapleton, and Constable families, offering a glimpse into the castle’s past. Though some elements were removed in the 20th century, much was later restored and reinstalled, preserving the room’s historic character.
