Sail Chaorainn

Sàil Chaorainn stands in the Highland council area of Scotland, rising to 1,002 metres as one of the country’s Munros. It lies east of Kintail, between Glen Affric and Loch Cluanie, where five Munros form a chain. The mountain’s Gaelic name means ‘edge of the rowan’, and it sits just north of the Sgùrr nan Conbhairean, separated by a 914-metre col. Walkers often tackle Sàil Chaorainn as part of the Cluanie Horseshoe, a four-Munro ridge crossing. Others pair it with the Sgùrr nan Conbhairean and Càrn Ghluasaid for a longer day. The Alltbeithe youth hostel in Glen Affric serves as a remote starting point for the full horseshoe, while the A87 near Cluanie Inn offers another route via the Sgùrr nan Conbhairean’s steep southern ridge. From the summit plateau two nearly equal tops look north and south. The northern top holds a small cairn, while the southern ridge drops toward the 922-metre Càrn a’ Mhadaidh-ruaidh. Eastwards the mountain drops into Coire Mheadhoin, its upper walls steep and rocky. To the west, grassy slopes give way to the broad Gleann na Cìche valley, a side of Glen Affric. The long south-east ridge leads toward the 845-metre An Reithe and the deep Coire Sgreumh beyond.
