Steinsberg Castle
Burg Steinsberg stands on a low hill above the village of Weiler, a suburb of Sinsheim in the Rhine-Neckar region. The castle first appears in records from 1109, when it belonged to the Counts of Oettingen. In the 13th century the Counts palatine of the Rhein took control before selling it in 1517 to the Lords of Venningen. A fire during the Peasants’ Revolt soon after forced the new owners to rebuild at their own cost. Lightning in 1777 left the structure damaged, and it fell into ruin until the town council began restorations in 1973. The keep, deep moat and two round towers survive as clear reminders of the castle’s past. Visitors can walk the restored sections and look out over the surrounding Neckar valley. The site shows how medieval power centres were built and later abandoned. The Lords of Venningen left their mark on the design before the castle passed into public hands. Restoration work uncovered original stonework and traces of the 16th-century rebuilding. Today the hilltop site offers quiet views across vineyards and farmland. The moat still holds water, framing the base of the keep. Two towers rise above the curtain wall, giving a sense of the castle’s former height. Information boards explain each visible part without cluttering the open spaces. The restored walls and gatehouse stand next to sections left in ruin, showing both care and time’s passage.
