Burg Groitzsch

The Wiprechtsburg Groitzsch stands on a spur of Pleistocene gravels jutting into the broad valley of the Weiße Elster, just north-west of the town of Groitzsch. It overlooks the river and its tributaries, the Schwennigke and the Schnauder, and commands a crossing used since medieval times. The site was first fortified in the 10th century with a timber-and-earth rampart, later rebuilt in stone under Count Wiprecht of Groitzsch in the late 11th century. Archaeologists have traced five continuous building periods from the 10th to the 13th century, making it one of the few castles in the region with such a long documented history. Wiprecht’s stone chapel and round tower, built about 1080, are recognised as the oldest masonry structures in Saxony. Excavations have uncovered more than six metres of stratified layers, allowing scholars to link pottery types, fortifications and daily life across five successive phases. The castle’s name comes from the Slavic grodišče, meaning a fortified place, and its fate is recorded in written sources from the 11th and 12th centuries. Finds of Neolithic pottery and bronze tools show earlier use of the spur, while the ‘Groitzsch group’ of Slavic ceramics gives its name to a wider ceramic tradition. Today the ruins include a partly restored round chapel and the stump of a round tower, both from around 1080. A landscaped amphitheatre surrounds the main buildings, and a vineyard of more than five thousand vines, flower beds and walking paths have been laid out. A lapidarium holds about forty boundary stones from the surrounding countryside. The site is split by a road that follows the line of the old dry moat, with the main castle rising ten to twelve metres above it. To the east lie the remains of the outer bailey, a cemetery and the ruins of a Romanesque church.
