Länge Castle

Schloss Länge is a ruined hunting lodge standing on a wooded plateau east of Neudingen, between Blumberg and Geisingen. Built between 1766 and 1768 for Prince Joseph Wenzel of Fürstenberg, it was designed by Franz Joseph Salzmann as a two-storey building with a mansard roof and four small towers. The lodge formed part of a larger baroque parkland laid out for hunting parties. Three outbuildings stood nearby, completing the ensemble. The building served briefly as a quarantine hospital in 1806 during an epidemic. By 1840 it had already been sold for demolition and was dismantled soon after. Only the foundations and scattered masonry remain today, marking the site of what was once a stately residence. Local legend still recalls the vanished castle, though historians treat the tale with caution. Written records and recent newspaper articles preserve memories of the place. Visitors reach the plateau along quiet woodland paths that cross the open heights above Neudingen. The ruins themselves are modest, consisting of low stone walls and a few standing fragments of the original structure. From the site there are wide views over the surrounding countryside towards the Black Forest. The atmosphere is peaceful, with only the sounds of birds and wind in the trees. The area invites a short walk to imagine how the baroque hunting lodge once looked.
