Britannia Adelphi Hotel

The Britannia Adelphi Hotel stands in Ranelagh Place, close to Liverpool city centre. The present stone building is the third on the site and is listed as a Grade II building. It belongs to the Britannia Hotels group and provides four hundred and two bedrooms, conference rooms, dining areas and a gym. The hotel opened in 1914 as the city’s most luxurious hotel outside London. Early guests included Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, while Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland performed here. The Sefton Suite copies the First Class Smoking Lounge of the Titanic, which was registered in Liverpool. A basement once held heated tanks for live turtles whose soup was sent to banquets across the country. Inside, public rooms show marble panelling, coffered arches and Empire-style decoration. The Central Court is lit from above and leads through the Hypostyle Hall to the Fountain Court. The hotel has appeared in films and TV series, including Brideshead Revisited and a BBC fly-on-the-wall documentary.
