Royal Court Theatre

Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre stands in the Metropolitan Borough near Roe Street. The present building opened in 1938 after a fire destroyed its predecessor. Designed in Art Deco style, it quickly became Liverpool’s leading theatre. Inside, the main auditorium has three levels: the Stalls, the Grand Circle and the Balcony. The basement lounge once echoed the Cunard liner Queen Mary, though it now serves as the Studio space. The nautical theme reflects the city’s seafaring past. The theatre survived the Liverpool Blitz intact while surrounding buildings fell. During the Second World War it hosted stars such as Ivor Novello, Margot Fonteyn and John Gielgud. Richard Burton made his stage debut here, and Judi Dench gave her professional start in 1957. In the 1980s it shifted to rock and pop concerts, welcoming artists like David Bowie, U2 and George Michael. The building gained Grade II listing in 1990 for its heritage value. Visitors find a cabaret-style stalls area with tables, chairs and a bar. The theatre now produces plays year-round alongside comedy and music events. Community groups such as a Choir and Youth Theatre meet on site. Recent shows include Christmas favourites like The Scouse Nativity and The Scouse Snow White. The venue also supports Liverpool’s only company dedicated to promoting BAME talent.
