Liverpool Empire Theatre

The Liverpool Empire Theatre stands on the corner of Lime Street in Liverpool. It is a large playhouse with a two-tier auditorium that seats 2,348 people. The building was designed by W. and T. R. Milburn with carvings by E. O. Griffiths. Its exterior features Portland stone and a free Neoclassical style. The interior includes a Louis XVI-style foyer and raked seating for clear sightlines. The theatre is part of the William Brown Street Conservation Area and is listed as a Grade II building. The Empire has hosted many famous performers over the years. Early acts included George Formby Sr., Dan Leno, and Florrie Forde. The Beatles played their final Liverpool Empire show on 5 December 1965. Other notable names include Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, and Queen. The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin also performed there. The theatre has staged Royal Variety Performances and remains a key venue for musicals, concerts, and plays. Visitors find a grand entrance foyer with stairs to the balcony on either side. The auditorium’s elephant caryatids and ornate decorations draw the eye. The stage has seen productions from *Better Days* to *Rent*. Ghost stories add to the theatre’s atmosphere, with reports of a painter called Len and a young girl in Victorian dress. Local youngsters perform in summer musicals through the Stage Experience programme.
