Kloster Leeden

Kloster Leeden stands in the small town of Tecklenburg in North Rhine-Westphalia. Founded around 1240 as a Cistercian convent for women, it later became a secular canoness foundation in 1538. The site includes a former monastery church now used as an Evangelical church and a preserved stiftshaus that houses the Zisterzienser- und Stiftsmuseum Leeden. The monastery’s history reflects major religious changes in the region. It was formally incorporated into the Cistercian order in 1491 under Bishop Konrad IV of Rietberg. After the Reformation, it became a Damenstift, surviving until 1812, except for a brief period as a Clarissan convent from 1631 to 1633. The museum documents this history through original records and exhibits on life in the Stift. Visitors find the former abbey church now serving as a Protestant church, with its medieval architecture still visible. The stiftshaus, once home to the abbess, contains the museum with displays on the monastery’s founding, dissolution, and daily life. The quiet surroundings of Leeden add to the reflective atmosphere of this historic site.
