Burg Haslage
Burg Haslage stands in the flat countryside south-west of Hasbergen in Osnabrück district. It was a medieval lowland castle built on a raised rectangle of earth. The site once had two ramparts and a dam-like approach road. The castle was first mentioned in 1292 as a Tecklenburg fief called Herslage. Its earliest owners, the Budde family, divided the stronghold early in the 14th century. A chapel was consecrated on the site in 1343 but gone before 1600. Lambert von Snetlage acquired the ruin in 1485, and the Werne family took over in 1621. By the 18th century only a manor remained, which burned down in 1945. Today only faint traces of the ramparts and the entrance causeway survive. Excavations show the defences were originally timber-framed and the inner area raised by about a metre. A dry-stone gatehouse wing, built with reused stones, has also been identified.
