City walls of Olomouc

The town fortifications of Olomouc once enclosed the historic core and protected it for centuries. Walls, towers, gates and ditches formed a connected system that was repeatedly renewed and adapted to new military technology. As the town grew, these defences lost their purpose. Large sections were pulled down and gave way to streets, squares and green spaces. What survives are individual stretches and structures that still allow visitors to trace the course of the old defensive line through the city.
