Burgstall Rackelsdorf

The Burgstall Rackelsdorf is a vanished medieval hilltop fortification in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria. It stands near the village of Rackelsdorf, part of the Pemfling municipality in the Cham district. The site is listed as a protected archaeological monument under the reference D-3-6741-0091. Its exact location remains uncertain, with two possible spots identified on a slope northeast of the village or on a steep western spur 300 metres north-northwest of it. The remains consist only of faint earthworks, offering little visible trace of the former stronghold. The fortification was first authorised in 1344 when Dietrich von Kürn received permission from Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian to build an ‘open house’ on the site. This early structure appears to have been destroyed shortly afterwards. In 1354 Pfalzgraf Ruprecht II granted permission to rebuild, though the work seems never to have taken place. Historical records and local studies by Bernhard Ernst document these events but provide no further details of the buildings or their fate. Visitors today find a quiet rural landscape where the castle once stood. The area is marked only by subtle changes in the ground, visible to trained eyes but unremarkable to casual walkers. A nearby scholarly catalogue by Ernst lists the site among other medieval fortifications in the region. The vanished walls and towers have left no standing ruins, yet the place remains a point of interest for those tracing the Oberpfalz’s medieval past.
