Burgstall Löwendorf

The Burgstall Löwendorf stands in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria, near the village of Pemfling. It was a hilltop fortification whose exact location remains uncertain. One possibility places it on an open hilltop above the village, where a well shaft was reportedly visible in 1930. Another theory suggests it stood 150 metres west on a rocky outcrop 660 metres high, overlooking the Mühlbach valley. The site first appears in records in 1345, but the family of Conrad Eyttenharter is linked to it from 1448. Their influence may have led to the castle’s construction, though by 1474 the family had abandoned the name. By 1636 it had become a small estate under Hans Georg von Marolding, who faced legal trouble for his Protestant faith. Visitors today find two possible spots to explore. One is the hilltop near the water tower, where faint traces of the old well remain. The other is the rocky knoll to the west, offering wide views over the valley. Neither shows clear ruins, but both hint at the site’s vanished past.
