Schloss Ittlingen

Schloss Ittlingen stands in the village of Ittlingen in the Heilbronn district of Baden-Württemberg. It is a simple but well-proportioned two-storey Baroque building with nine window axes and a half-hipped roof. The large courtyard entrance shows late-Baroque stonework and bears the coat of arms of the Schmidberg family. Beneath the castle lies a barrel-vaulted cellar from an earlier manor house built in 1577 by the Freiherren von Gemmingen. The site has belonged to the same family for more than 120 years. Traces of earlier owners appear in carved dates and heraldic panels: above the cellar door the year 1577 and the arms of the Gemmingen, Landschad von Steinach and von Mentzingen families. From the 13th century the counts of Oettingen held rights here, and in 1414 Dietrich von Gemmingen acquired half the village as a fief, buying the other half soon after. Visitors find a quiet Baroque manor set around a small courtyard. The cellar vault and the carved portal show the building’s layered past. Outside, the plain façade and half-hipped roof give the house its calm presence in the surrounding village.
