Bramall Lane

Bramall Lane stands in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, on a road named after the Bramall family. It began as a cricket ground in 1855, built away from the city’s smoke on land leased from the Duke of Norfolk. The ground opened with a match between “The Eleven” and “The Twenty Two,” where the smaller side won by an innings and 28 runs. Yorkshire played their first county match there the same year, though the club was not officially formed until 1863. The ground hosted a single Test match in 1902, when England lost to Australia by 143 runs. After 118 years as a cricket venue, Yorkshire moved their matches to Abbeydale Park in 1973. The stadium became a football ground in 1862 and hosted the first football tournament final in 1867. Bramall Lane was Sheffield’s largest stadium in the 19th century and saw early unification talks between Sheffield and London football associations. It became home to Sheffield United in 1889 and remains the oldest major stadium still hosting professional football. The ground has staged five England football internationals before 1930 and the 1912 FA Cup Final replay, won by Barnsley. In 2022 it hosted UEFA Women’s Euro matches, including the semi-final between England and Sweden. Visitors find a modern all-seated stadium with a capacity of 32,050, surrounded by four covered stands. The record attendance of 68,287 came in 1936 for an FA Cup tie between Sheffield United and Leeds United. The South Stand was built over the old cricket square, enclosing the pitch on all sides. The ground still bears the names of its two ends: the Pavilion End and the Football Ground End. Outside, the Sheaf House pub marks the top of Bramall Lane, a reminder of the area’s past. Inside, the stadium carries echoes of cricket, football and concerts from Bruce Springsteen to Rod Stewart.
