Site Gallery

Site Gallery stands in Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter, a converted warehouse on Brown Street. It began in 1978 as an independent photography gallery in Walkley before moving to its present building in 1988. The gallery changed its name to Site Gallery in 1996 after expanding to include digital and multimedia work. Since 2018 Sharna Jackson has led the gallery as artistic director, working alongside co-director Judith Harry. It remains a registered charity, relying on grants and fundraising to support its programme. The gallery is known for hosting UK premieres and solo shows by internationally recognised artists. Sophie Calle’s first UK solo exhibition appeared here, alongside work by Susan Hiller, Mat Collishaw and Susan Philipsz. It has also premiered performances by Forced Entertainment and digital festivals such as Lovebytes. In 2003 it presented six new commissions in the crossover between performance, digital media and installation. Mike Kelley’s final project, Mobile Homestead Videos, was shown here in 2013. Inside, visitors find a shop selling artists’ products, magazines and cards. The gallery’s education programme works with young people across South Yorkshire through projects like the Site Young Apprentice Scheme. Workshops, talks and screenings run alongside exhibitions, linking emerging talent with established names. The building itself, redeveloped in 2014, provides space for installations, film screenings and live events.
