Dommuseum Salzburg

The Dommuseum Salzburg sits inside the southern oratory of the city’s cathedral, sharing its space with the diocesan collection. The building itself is part of the DomQuartier, a route that links the cathedral with other historic rooms across the square. The museum began as a private effort in the years before the First World War, when Canon Josef Lahnsteiner gathered early church treasures. In 1954 some pieces were shown for the first time after the cathedral’s rededication. The public museum opened in 1974 and has grown into a recognised centre for medieval and early modern art. Its permanent display holds works from the eighth to the eighteenth centuries once used in Salzburg churches and monasteries. Among the highlights are the Rupertus Cross, the largest surviving metal cross from the first thousand years of Christianity, and a double-armed reliquary cross from around 1100 that may have been the coronation cross of Hungarian kings. Paintings and sculptures by Georg Raphael Donner, Johann Michael Rottmayr and Paul Troger illustrate the region’s artistic development. A late thirteenth-century Limoges dove-shaped ciborium and Michael Pacher’s Madonna round out the collection. At the southern arch of the cathedral dome stands the reconstructed Kunst- und Wunderkammer from the late seventeenth century. This cabinet of curiosities once held more than 130 finely cut rock-crystal objects made in the prince-archbishop’s own workshop. The original cases still hold minerals, scientific instruments, ivory carvings, exotic shells and stuffed animals alongside globes and fossils. The room offers a quiet space where visitors can study the same kinds of objects that fascinated baroque collectors.
