Black Mount

Black Mount is a mountain range in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It lies between Glen Orchy and Glen Coe and contains four Munros: Stob Ghabhar, Stob a’ Choire Odhair, Creise and Meall a’ Bhuiridh. Lower hills such as Ben Inverveigh and Meall Tairbh sit between the range and the Bridge of Orchy. The Black Mount Deer Forest covers moorland, the mountains themselves, and several rivers, burns, lochs and tarns. Its scenery is so fine that it forms part of the Ben Nevis and Glen Coe National Scenic Area, one of forty such protected landscapes in Scotland. Forest Lodge, a building on the estate, is listed at category B by Historic Scotland. The Clachlet Traverse is a 25-kilometre walk that crosses all four Munros in a single outing. It starts at the Inveroran Inn near Bridge of Orchy and finishes at the Kingshouse Hotel where Glen Etive meets Glen Coe. Walkers using public transport must hike an extra four kilometres from Bridge of Orchy to reach the start. The Kingshouse Hotel can be reached by the Fort William to Glasgow bus. The route is demanding, passing high ridges and steep slopes above remote glens. On the ground a visitor finds wide moorland plateaus, narrow ridges and deep corries. The peaks rise above 1 000 metres, giving long views across Rannoch Moor and towards Ben Nevis. Forest Lodge stands beside a river at the edge of the deer forest, its stone walls weathered by centuries of wind. The route passes lochans whose dark water reflects the surrounding crags. At the Kingshouse Hotel walkers can rest before continuing their journey through Glencoe.
