Christuskirche Mörbisch

The Christuskirche stands in Mörbisch am See, a village in Burgenland near the Hungarian border. It is an Evangelical Lutheran church under state protection. The building belongs to the Evangelical Superintendentur A. B. Burgenland within the Evangelical Church in Austria. The church’s history begins in 1578 when an Evangelical community first met in Mörbisch. After a long ban on Protestant worship, Emperor Joseph II’s Tolerance Patent of 1781 allowed the community to reorganise. In 1786–90 a parish house and school were built, and in 1792 the first Tolerance church without a tower was completed. The present church dates from 1853–54, when Baumeister Geschrey added a neogothic façade and tower. Inside, the nave is covered by a barrel vault between pilasters. The two-manual organ with seventeen stops was installed in 1985 by Gebrüder Krenn. A 1792 Taufstein and a 1976 oil painting of the Resurrection by Gerhard Gloser flank the classical pulpit-altar. The tower houses a bell cast in 1854 by Friedrich Seltenhofer.
