Katholische Kirche Mörbisch am See
The Kreuzerhöhungskirche stands in Mörbisch am See, a village in Burgenland near the Hungarian border. It is a Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, protected as a listed monument. The church’s history goes back to a 14th-century chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine, later rebuilt in the late 15th century under Saint Ulrich. The building shows layers of time: the preserved late-Gothic tower with its 19th-century gable ring and helm, the classical nave front dated 1834, and a modern eastern extension finished in 1962. Inside, Josef Molitor’s 1834 altarpiece depicts the Exaltation of the Cross and the Holy Trinity. A red-marble late-Gothic font and a 1792 bell cast in Ödenburg by Johann Georg Koechel remain from earlier periods. Visitors enter through a classical doorway into a nave with a flat ribbed vault. The newer part holds a rectangular sanctuary with a coffered ceiling. Since 2015 the altar, font and lectern have been fashioned from beige Danube limestone by Kurt Schwarz, while Heinz Ebner’s circular fused-glass disc, about four metres wide, adorns the sanctuary wall. The churchyard and surrounding lanes offer quiet views across the village and towards the lake.
