Schloss Flischbach

Flischbach is a small village in Lower Austria set among gentle hills near the Flischbach stream. The remains of the old Schloss Flischbach stand on a low northeast-facing slope at the edge of the settlement. Once a two-storey rectangular manor with a mansard roof and a small cupola-topped turret, the building formed the centre of a working estate. The site first appears in records in the 11th or 12th century when a local noble family, the Flischbachs, held the land. By the 14th century the property had passed through several hands, including the Eyttenharter family, but nothing is known of the original house. In the 18th century the manor took its final shape under new owners, either the Schellers or Baron von Glingensperg. After the estate was divided into farms in the 19th century, the building gradually fell out of use and was demolished in 1953. Today only a single vaulted cellar survives, built into the foundations of a modern farmhouse on the same plot. The cellar walls and arched ceiling are the last physical traces of the centuries-old seat. A low triangular curtain wall that once enclosed the courtyard and outbuildings has also disappeared, leaving only the slope and the quiet stream as reminders of the vanished house.
