Almsee

The Almsee is a small glacial lake in Upper Austria’s Salzkammergut region, set in the Almtal valley beneath the Totes Gebirge mountains. It stretches about 2.3 kilometres long and 700 metres wide, fed by mountain streams and drained by the Alm River. The lake lies eleven kilometres south of Grünau im Almtal, surrounded by steep slopes and dense forests. Since 1965 the area has been protected as a nature reserve, preserving its quiet waters and wildlife. The Austrian ethologist Konrad Lorenz studied greylag geese here, making the lake important in behavioural science. Nearby stands Hubertihaus, a hunting lodge once belonging to the House of Hanover. The lake’s clear waters reflect the rugged peaks of the Totes Gebirge, offering peaceful views and gentle walking trails. Visitors often spot waterfowl and rare plants along the shoreline, while the surrounding woods provide shade for short hikes. The protected status keeps the landscape unspoilt, with few signs of modern development. Lorenz’s research brought international attention to the lake’s natural rhythms and birdlife. The nearby hunting lodge adds a touch of aristocratic history to the scene. Quiet paths lead around the water, ideal for short strolls or quiet contemplation. At the water’s edge, visitors find benches and small clearings for picnics or birdwatching. The lake is shallow in places, with sandy shallows that warm in summer. In winter the frozen surface attracts skaters when conditions allow. The surrounding forest paths rise gently into the hills, offering wider views of the valley. The lodge and its grounds remain private, but the open landscape invites exploration. The whole area feels remote despite its easy reach from Grünau. It remains a place where nature takes centre stage.
