The Ameisstein is a 776-metre mountain in the Toten Gebirge range, rising above the northern shore of the Almsee in Upper Austria. Its steep northern and eastern faces drop almost sheer, while the southern and western slopes rise more gently. The name comes from the Old High German word for woodland clearing, reflecting the area’s history of logging. No marked path leads to the top, but the southern approach offers an easy scramble. A metal summit cross stands on the highest point, accompanied by a visitors’ book.
Climbers and walkers are drawn here for the sweeping views across the Almsee and the rugged peaks of the Toten Gebirge. The contrast between the sheer walls and the gentler lower slopes makes the ascent interesting without being technical. The mountain’s isolation keeps the summit peaceful, even when the valley below is busy. Its modest height rewards effort with a grand panorama rather than a gruelling climb.
On the summit visitors find the cross and book, a simple record of those who have reached the top. The surrounding forest and rocky crags frame the Almsee’s blue waters below. From this vantage point the whole Toten Gebirge stretches away to the horizon. The route up follows narrow tracks through mixed woodland before opening onto the open southern flank.
