Heidenkeller

The Burg Heidenkeller stands on a hillside at 354 metres above sea level on the southern edge of the Münstertal valley near Münchweier, a district of Ettenheim in the Ortenaukreis. It is the remains of a former hilltop fortification, once surrounded by a wall that enclosed an area measuring about seventy-five by thirty-five metres. A ditch once ran along the southern side, though it has since been largely filled in. Archaeologists found pottery fragments there dating to the Hallstatt period, showing the site was used long before written records began. The stones that once formed the walls were taken in the early nineteenth century to build an octagonal stone pyramid with steps. This structure still stands today, offering wide views across the Rhine plain. The pyramid’s design and placement show how local builders reused the old fort’s materials to create a new kind of landmark. Visitors walk up a gentle slope to reach the pyramid, which sits near the edge of the former fort’s ramparts. From its platform they can see the valley below and the distant line of the Black Forest hills. The site is quiet, with only the sound of wind and occasional farm machinery in the fields. A few information boards explain the history of the Heidenkeller and its links to the early Celtic settlers of the region.
