Gisenburg

The Gisenburg is the remains of a former hilltop fortification standing at 349 metres above sea level in the Klosterwald forest on the southern side of the Münstertal valley. It lies close to Ettenheimmünster, a district of the town of Ettenheim in the Ortenau district of Baden-Württemberg. The site once covered about 190 metres by 40 metres, with earthworks and stone walls now reduced to faint traces. Two ramparts with neck ditches mark the southern edge, while a terrace winds around the northern spur. Archaeologists believe the stones were later taken to build the nearby monastery. The fort dates back to pre-Christian Celtic times, when it served as a refuge for local people. Written records first mention the Gisenburg in the annals of Ettenheimmünster monastery, where an Alemannic nobleman named Gisiko is said to have killed the Irish monk Landolin around the year 640. The name Gisenburg itself may come from this Gisiko, linking the site to the early medieval history of the valley. Over the centuries the stones were removed, leaving only the earthworks visible today. Visitors walk through the quiet Klosterwald to reach the low grassy mounds and shallow ditches that mark the former fort. The forest surrounds the site, giving a sense of isolation and peace. From the northern terrace there are views down into the Münstertal, while the southern ramparts overlook the valley floor. The Gisenburg offers a quiet place to reflect on the layers of history beneath the soil.
