Burg Broggingen

Burg Broggingen stands on a low hill in the fields north-west of Broggingen village, part of Herbolzheim town. The site is a quiet stretch of farmland in the Emmendingen district of Baden-Württemberg. Its elevation is only 253 metres above sea level, yet the gentle rise gives views over the surrounding countryside. The name ‘Bürklin’ still marks the plot where the castle once rose. No stone walls, towers or earthworks remain above ground today. Archaeologists recognise the spot only by scattered medieval potsherds and slight earthworks. The castle is worth a visit for anyone interested in the medieval Breisgau region. Researchers Alfons Zettler and Thomas Zotz list it in their survey of Breisgau castles. Their book shows how Broggingen fitted into the network of small lordly seats in the 12th and 13th centuries. The site helps historians trace how local nobles organised their power before larger fortresses took over. Though modest, it illustrates a wider pattern of land control across south-west Germany. A visitor finds an open field with no visible ruins. A low rise in the soil hints at former ramparts. The surrounding farm tracks offer quiet walks among rape and wheat. From the hilltop the spire of Herbolzheim church can be seen to the south-east. The scene is peaceful, with only the wind and birds for company. It is a place to imagine the vanished castle rather than to see it.
