Burgstall Wenigmünchen

The Burgstall Wenigmünnen is a vanished medieval hilltop fortification standing 515 metres above sea level on the Kalvarienberg in Wenigmünchen. It lies 140 metres south-west of the parish church of St Michael and commands views over the surrounding countryside. The site was once home to the local noble lords of Munich, first recorded in 1158 as Altmann de Munichin. Archaeologists recognise the earthworks as the remains of a high or late medieval stronghold. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists the site as a protected archaeological monument. The only visible remnant is a low artificial mound where the keep once stood. No walls, towers or buildings survive above ground. The site is marked on modern maps simply as a ‘Burgstall’, the German term for a ruined castle. Visitors today walk over grassy slopes that conceal the buried foundations of the old fortress. The Kalvarienberg itself is a quiet hill crowned by a small wayside cross. From the mound there are wide views across the flat fields of the Fürstenfeldbruck district. The church spire of St Michael can be seen a short distance away. The site offers a quiet place to stand where medieval lords once looked out over their lands. The absence of modern intrusions lets the imagination picture the vanished stronghold. It is a modest but tangible link to the 12th-century world of the Herren von München.
