Boulevard United Reformed Church

The Boulevard United Reformed Church stands on Gregory Boulevard in Hyson Green, Nottingham. Built in 1900 as Hyson Green Congregational Church, it replaced an earlier chapel opened in 1824 by Castle Gate Congregational Centre. The current structure was designed by architect Harry Gill using Bulwell stone and Derbyshire dressings. It seated 600 people and later merged with the United Reformed Church. The building reflects the growth of Congregationalism in Nottingham during the 19th century. The church’s organ, installed in 1909, came from Castle Gate Congregational Centre and dated back to 1865. It was built by Forster and Andrews, a well-known firm of organ builders. The organ was later removed and sent to the Netherlands. The church’s history is tied to the Congregational movement, which began in Nottingham in 1824. Inside, the church retains its original stonework and spacious interior. The high ceilings and large windows create a light, airy atmosphere. The building’s exterior, with its contrasting stone dressings, stands out on Gregory Boulevard. The surrounding area of Hyson Green adds to the sense of a historic, well-established community. The church remains a landmark in Nottingham’s religious and architectural heritage.
