All Saints' Church, Nottingham

All Saints’ Church stands in Nottingham’s Arboretum ward, a large Victorian building of sandstone with a tall broach spire. It was designed by Thomas Chambers Hine and completed in 1864 to seat five hundred worshippers. The church was paid for by William Windley, a local magistrate, who also funded a parsonage and a school nearby. Its Gothic Revival style includes a ring of ten bells, the heaviest weighing sixteen hundredweight. The spire reaches fifty-three metres, making it the eighth tallest structure in the city. After wartime decline the area became an Urban Priority Area, and the congregation shrank to thirty or forty by the year 2000. The church has played a central role in Nottingham’s religious life since its consecration by the Bishop of Lincoln. Twelve hundred people crowded inside for the opening service, with the St Mary’s choir and Miss Fanny Brookes on harmonium. Over the decades the building has housed successive vicars whose names appear on the parish list. The organ, rebuilt in 1906 by Norman and Beard, replaced an earlier instrument opened in 1865. The bells, cast by John Taylor & Co, were restored in 2020 after pigeon damage left two tonnes of guano above the ringing chamber. Inside, the nave retains its Victorian proportions with high arcades and clear glass windows. The organ case and choir stalls date from the 19th century, while the ringing chamber now has a modern steel frame for the bells. The former school building next door has been turned into workspaces and community rooms. Sunday services continue each week, though the congregation is small. The church’s Grade II listing recognises both its architecture and its place in Nottingham’s history.
