Raleigh Road United Church

Raleigh Road United Church stands at the corner of Raleigh Road and Stanmore Gardens in Richmond, a London borough known for its green spaces and riverside walks. It occupies the former buildings of Kew Road Methodist Church, founded in 1868, and St Paul’s Congregational Church, which opened in 1898. The Congregational building was largely funded by Alderman Sir Charles Burt, a former mayor of Richmond and a leading figure at The Vineyard Church. Both congregations later merged to form the present church. The site now serves as a single place of worship for the united community. The church is worth visiting for its layered history and the personalities connected to its past. Kew Road Methodist Church began as a modest local mission before expanding into a permanent building. St Paul’s Congregational Church was built with substantial support from Sir Charles Burt, reflecting his influence in Richmond. The merger of the two congregations created a shared identity that continues today. Revd Stephen Lewis serves as minister, supported by deacon Richard Goldstraw in leading services and activities. Inside, the church contains spaces adapted from both original buildings, blending their architectural styles. The main hall retains features from the Methodist chapel, while the sanctuary incorporates elements from the Congregational church. A Junior Church session meets regularly for students, providing activities for younger members. The building sits quietly among residential streets, offering a calm place for reflection. Its corner position makes it easy to find, yet it remains unassuming in the neighbourhood.
