St Luke's Church, Kew

St Luke’s Church stands in Kew, a quiet corner of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Built in 1889 in the Gothic Revival style by the architects Goldie, Child and Goldie, the church replaced a temporary iron church that had served the growing population. Its sandstone walls and towerless nave were designed to seat four hundred worshippers, though full congregations were never regular. The chancel and nave share the same height, and an intended spire was never added. Inside, the church once housed a Henry Willis organ installed in 1897, later replaced by a restored Walker pipe organ from 1880. The building now serves the community in new ways while keeping its spiritual heart. In the late 1970s the congregation had fallen to as few as twelve, and the church was often described as cold and uncomfortable. Plans were drawn up to convert much of the space into a secular day centre, and the work was completed in two phases between 1984 and 1989. The chancel became the worship area again, while the rest of the building was adapted for community use. An upstairs room, opened in 1990 by Princess Alexandra, is now used for parties, weddings and celebrations. Visitors find a calm place where old and new purposes meet. The Avenue Halls occupy the former nave and aisles, managed by the Kew Community Trust and available for hire. The Avenue Club runs social activities for all ages, from adult education to children’s parties. The restored Walker organ stands ready for occasional services, and the church’s magazine, The Link, keeps locals informed. Outside, the sandstone walls and simple lines recall the 19th-century design, while inside the light falls on the plain nave and the small chancel. The building remains a quiet witness to Kew’s changing needs.
