Wimberg
The Wimberg is a ridge in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. It stretches between the valleys of the Kleine Rodl, Pesenbach, Große Mühl and Steinerne Mühl rivers. The southern part of the ridge is called Hansberg after the church of St Johann am Wimberg on its western slope. A smaller hill to the north is known as Petersberg, named for its local church dedication.
The ridge’s name once covered the whole upland area. In medieval records it appears as Windberg or Windiberg. The estate of St Florian’s Abbey in this part of the Mühlviertel began with lands donated in 1108 by Eppo von Windberg and his wife Regelind.
A district road, the L1514 or Wimbergstraße, crosses the ridge. From the ridge walkers look across rolling farmland and forested hills. The church of St Johann am Wimberg stands near the southern end, its white walls visible from the road. Petersberg, the next hill north, carries another small church at its summit.
