Weiberstein

The Weiberstein stands beside the old Meissen road between Kötzschenbroda and Serkowitz in Radebeul. It is a simple sandstone memorial under Denkmalschutz, marking the spot where two local farm women once stopped a hunting party in 1784. The road there had been eaten away by the Elbe, and the women feared the carriages would break through. The women’s quick thinking saved the elector, later King Friedrich August I, and his companions from a dangerous accident. In gratitude he granted them a lifelong pension. The incident led to major river works and, by 1788, a new stone road from Dresden to Meissen. A century later the stone was cleaned and re-lettered to keep the story alive. Today the renewed monument shows the Wettin coat of arms and a clear inscription. It sits in a quiet corner just outside Serkowitz village centre. The surrounding street is now a tree-lined avenue, but the stone still points to the spot where ordinary courage changed a royal route.
