The Wehlaberg rises 144 metres above the flat Brandenburg countryside near Krausnick-Groß Wasserburg. It is the highest point in the Krausnicker Berge range and lies inside the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The summit is covered in woodland and belongs to the village of Groß Wasserburg. The north-western slope falls within the Heideseen nature reserve. A metal survey pyramid once crowned the hill in 1896, marking the spot as a fine lookout.
The present tower was built in 2003 and stands 28 metres tall. Its lower third is solid concrete, while the upper two-thirds are timber-clad. A concrete staircase leads to a covered platform four metres up, then another concrete flight to a landing, followed by wooden stairs to the top platform. From 24 metres above ground the view stretches across the Krausnicker Berge and the Heideseen to the north. On clear days the Tropical Islands hall appears west-south-west and the Berlin TV tower, 58 kilometres away, can be seen north-north-west.
The hilltop is crossed by the European long-distance path E10 and the Gurken cycle route. About 600 metres east of the summit a mobile-phone mast and a fire-watch tower stand on another knoll. The surrounding forests and lakes offer quiet walking, with few visitors interrupting the view.
