Wallfahrtskirche

St. Maria de Rosario stands in Dimbach, a village in Lower Franconia. A small Romanesque chapel once occupied the site in the 11th century, later enlarged with a choir tower. By the 13th century builders had started the present church, using surviving late-Romanesque fragments inside. In 1306 the monastery of Münsterschwarzach gained rights over the village and in 1325 commissioned a Gothic expansion of the chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A west tower and side aisles were consecrated in 1334, and a small priory with three monks was established. The church’s importance grew with the arrival of the Rosary Brotherhood in 1630, which revived an older pilgrimage tradition. After the Thirty Years War the brotherhood was refounded in 1661 and a resident chaplain arrived in 1653. Wall-faring steadily increased through the 17th and 18th centuries, though it remained largely local. In 1685 a baptismal font was installed, signalling the community’s desire for independent parish status. By the early 18th century the interior was given a Baroque makeover that still shapes today’s appearance. Inside, the church is a three-aisled basilica with a west tower and a five-sided choir. The Gothic choir, completed early in the 14th century, contains a sacristy and chapel on either side and is vaulted in ribbed Gothic style. The tower’s ground floor serves as a porch with a richly moulded pointed arch doorway and two sculpted corbels on the west wall. The nave is divided from the aisles by octagonal piers with fluted bases, carrying pointed arches. Above, the clerestory windows were once pointed but are now plain rectangles. The Fränkischer Marienweg pilgrimage route passes the church, linking it to the wider landscape of Lower Franconia.
