Wallenburg
Schloss Wallenburg is an old noble residence just north of Miesbach in Upper Bavaria. It stands on a ridge above the Schlierach valley, with the Hofwies high terrace to the south and east. The site has been settled since at least the 13th century, when it first appears in records.
The castle was the main seat of the Lords of Waldeck until 1734, when the line died out and the property passed to Bavaria. After a fire in 1467 it was rebuilt, and in the late 17th century parts were remodelled. Today only the south wing survives intact, including the Rittersaal with its stucco work by Johann Baptist Zimmermann.
Visitors walk up tree-lined avenues that lead to the castle from east and south. The eastern approach, the Wallenburger Allee, is protected as a natural monument and still shows its original cobblestones beneath centuries-old oaks, lindens, maples and ashes. From the castle grounds there is a clear view across the valley to the Wendelstein and the peaks of the Mangfall range.
