Waldhäuserriegel

Waldhäuserriegel stands 1,151 metres above sea level in the Bavarian Forest National Park, a protected core zone where coniferous alpine forest covers the slopes. It lies two kilometres from the German-Czech border, northeast of Grafenau and above the tree line at its summit. The nearest village is Waldhäuser, part of Neuschönau, where visitors begin most walks.

The mountain is recognised for its quiet trails and clear views across the park’s old-growth spruce and fir woods. Lusen, 1,373 metres high, rises to the northeast, while Hohlstein at 1,196 metres stands to the east. Rangers point out that the ridge shelters rare capercaillie and lynx.

On the summit visitors find open granite slabs warmed by the sun and a low stone windbreak. Paths wind through thick stands of spruce and fir, their trunks straight and dark. The air carries the scent of resin and damp earth. In winter the slopes hold snow long after it melts from lower paths.
