Szigetcsép
Szigetcsép is a small village on Csepel Island in Pest county, Hungary. The island lies between the Danube’s main channel and a side arm, forming a quiet green belt near Budapest. Two other settlements share the island: Lórév and the larger town of Ráckeve, known for its Serbian, Hungarian and German communities. Szigetcsép itself has around one hundred residents, a mix of Serbs, Hungarians and Germans. Most of the original Serbian families left in 1924 to settle in Bački Brestovac in Serbia. The village preserves elements of its multicultural past despite its small size. Serbian traditions remain visible in local customs and the occasional use of Cyrillic script. The island’s isolation has helped maintain these cultural traces over the decades. Visitors notice the peaceful atmosphere and the contrast with nearby Budapest’s busy streets. The Danube’s side arm offers calm water and abundant birdlife for those who walk along its banks. Paths wind through orchards and along the river, passing old farm buildings and small gardens. The village centre has a few modest houses and a modest Serbian Orthodox church. From the riverbank there are wide views across the water towards the mainland. The air often carries the scent of ripening fruit in summer. Szigetcsép remains a quiet place where time moves slowly and the Danube’s presence is felt in every season.
