The medieval town wall in Ingolstadt’s old town still stands at Unterer Graben 45. Built in 1370, the wall forms the back of a small house near the north-eastern edge of the historic centre. The wall is listed in Bavaria’s heritage register under the same number as the building.

The house itself began as a single-storey structure with a lean-to roof in the 19th century. Above, the full length of the old sentry walk survives intact, its brick floor lined with simple arcades of single brick courses. The original timber frame, morticed posts with rails and sill on curved brackets, remains in place. Between 2008 and 2010 the house was restored and a new floor added, yet both arcades and walkway were kept exactly as they were.

Visitors see the narrow sentry path running above the brick arcades. The timber posts and rails show the careful craft of the late Middle Ages. From the walkway the rooftops of the old town stretch out to the west, while the wall itself turns north along the street. The contrast between the low house and the high medieval wall gives a clear sense of Ingolstadt’s past defences.
