St. Clara

The Stiftskirche St. Clara stands in Hörde, a district of Dortmund, as a red-brick Gothic Revival church. Built between 1863 and 1865 to plans by Arnold Güldenpfennig, it replaced an earlier monastery church. The church earned the nickname Ziegeldom for its two million red bricks. After wartime destruction in 1944, the church was rebuilt and restored. Between 1985 and 1995 the interior was renovated and modernised. Modern stained-glass windows by Wilhelm Buschulte were installed. The four steel bells cast in 1954 by Bochumer Verein remain a notable feature. Inside, the mechanical-action organ by Gebrüder Stockmann has 36 stops across two manuals and pedal. The church belongs to the Route of Industrial Culture’s Sacred Buildings trail. Its tower, rebuilt in 1988, rises above the Hörde skyline.
