The Spielmann stands on the main Alpine ridge in the Glockner group of the Hohe Tauern, its summit marking the border between Kärnten and Salzburg. The peak rises to 3 027 m above sea level, a little under 7 km northwest of Heiligenblut. The usual route follows a continuously marked path that stays straightforward when snow and ice are absent, though one short section near the top is protected by a steel cable.
The climb begins at the Glocknerhaus beside the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Walkers follow the trail north-north-east across the Trögeralm slopes, drop briefly into the basin of the old Southern Pfandlschartenkees and climb again to the Lower Pfandlscharte at 2 663 m. From there the route follows the easy West Ridge and the cable-assisted step to the summit cross, taking roughly two and a half to three hours from the Glocknerhaus.
An alternative route from the Hochtor in the east passes the Brennkogelscharte and the remaining Guttalkees, skirts the historic Knappenstube mining area, crosses the Spielmannscharte and ascends the uncomplicated East Ridge to the top in about three hours. The high-level path linking Glocknerhaus, Spielmann and Hochtor forms part of the Tauern Höhenweg.
