Schildberg
The Schildberg is a forested hill rising to 393 metres in the northern Wienerwald, east of St Pölten in Lower Austria. It straddles the municipal boundary between St Pölten and Böheimkirchen, with several lower summits on the Böheimkirchen side. A broadcasting mast stands just below the true summit, transmitting several radio programmes. The hill is the highest point within the city limits of St Pölten. The Schildberg is valued for its quiet woodland walks and sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. On clear days the Alps are visible to the south-west, while to the north-east the city of St Pölten and the Traisen valley can be seen. The gentle slopes and well-marked trails make it a popular local destination for hikers and cyclists. Visitors follow forest paths that wind through beech and oak stands to the summit clearing around the mast. From here a broad panorama unfolds over the Wienerwald and the distant peaks. The air is noticeably cooler and fresher than in the city below, making the short climb worthwhile.
