Scheienkopf
The Scheienkopf is a mountain on the border between Liechtenstein and Austria. Its summit reaches 2,159 metres and lies in the Rätikon range of the Eastern Alps. The mountain stands mostly in Austrian territory, though its eastern slopes dip into Liechtenstein. At the foot of the Scheienkopf lies the commune of Balzers, a Liechtenstein enclave surrounded by Austrian land. Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, lies a short distance to the west.
The Scheienkopf offers clear views across the Rhine valley and into the Alps. Its height and position make it a landmark for hikers and climbers in the region. The mountain’s slopes provide routes for summer walks and winter ski tours. Nearby maps mark the boundary lines that run along its ridges. The contrast between Austrian and Liechtenstein territory adds interest to any ascent.
On the summit ridge walkers find open grassland and rocky outcrops. The Austrian side drops steeply into alpine meadows while the Liechtenstein slopes are gentler. The views extend to the Piz Buin and other peaks of the Rätikon. The mountain’s quiet trails see fewer visitors than busier resorts nearby. Its position on the frontier gives a sense of space and remoteness.
