Scheiblingstein

The Scheiblingstein stands at 2197 metres in the Haller Mauern, a subgroup of the Ennstaler Alps. Its summit marks the border between the Upper Austrian village of Rosenau am Hengstpaß and the Styrian market town of Admont. The mountain is also called the Großer Scheiblingstein to distinguish it from lower neighbours. The Haller Mauern form a rugged limestone chain stretching roughly forty kilometres from the Pyhrn Pass toward the Gesäuse. Climbers value the long east ridge and the steep north faces of these peaks. Willi End’s alpine guide describes the Scheiblingstein as a worthy goal for experienced walkers. The route usually starts from the Hengstpass road at about 950 metres and gains 1250 metres in height. The final section follows a narrow crest with drop-offs on both sides, requiring sure-footedness and a head for heights. In winter the mountain becomes an objective for ski mountaineers, who ascend the same slopes when snow lies deep enough. On the summit visitors find a small metal summit cross and a visitors’ book housed in a metal cylinder. The view stretches from the Dachstein glacier in the south to the Totes Gebirge in the north. The Haller Mauern’s jagged skyline forms a dramatic foreground for the wide forested valleys below. On clear days the Enns river can be seen winding toward the Gesäuse gorges. The contrast between the pale limestone cliffs and the dark spruce forests makes the scene striking.
