Scheiblingkirche
The Scheiblingkirche was a medieval round church in Enns, Upper Austria, built in the late 12th century. Its first written mention dates from 1342, and it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church stood on the site of today’s main square, leaving an empty space after its demolition. No archaeological work has yet explored the site beneath the square. Its name, ecclesia rotunda, reflects its circular Romanesque form. The church’s round core had a conical roof and later additions such as the Holy Spirit Chapel from 1389 and the Three Kings Chapel from 1416. A small eastern choir and possibly a sacristy were attached. The tower stood at the western edge, where the town tower now rises. Paintings by Albrecht Altdorfer around 1520 and a woodcut by Bartholomäus Reisacher in 1562 show the church’s spire. Inside, the building housed an organ on an upper gallery. A surviving altar slab was reused as a table in the town tower’s watch room. Ten grave slabs from the church now pave the gallery floor. A 1447 source confirms the presence of a baptismal font, even though the Scheiblingkirche was never a parish church.
