Scharfenstein
Scharfenstein is a rocky hill spur in the Harz Mountains, near Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt. It rises from the edge of the Upper Harz and overlooks two valleys: the Kalte Tal to the west and the Zillierbach stream to the south. A striking rock formation called the Scharfensteinklippe crowns the spur. The hill is part of the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park and stands between the Eichberg-Süd to the north and the Astberg to the east. Nöschenrode, a village southeast of Wernigerode, lies about 1.5 kilometres away. The Scharfenstein is checkpoint number 34 in the Harzer Wandernadel hiking network, a system of marked trails and summits across the Harz. A footpath climbs from the north via the Eichberg-Süd, while a narrow stone staircase leads up from the southern end. At the top is a viewing point with long views over the Harz range. The Brocken, the highest mountain in the region, can be seen from here. The spur’s sides are steep, so the only safe descent is back along the route taken to reach the summit. Visitors find a quiet hilltop with a rock outcrop and a clear outlook over forested ridges and valleys. The stone staircase and footpath are the only ways up, making the climb a straightforward challenge. The view takes in the Upper Harz and distant peaks, including the Brocken on clear days. The surrounding nature park offers further walking routes and peaceful woodland. The spur itself is small but striking, with its steep sides and open summit.
