Sassenburg

The Sassenburg is a lowland ringwork ruin in Lower Saxony, built on an ice-age inland dune beside the Aller near Dannenbüttel. It stands within the Allertal nature reserve, four kilometres west of Gifhorn town centre. The Aller’s meanders now curve around the east and north sides of the site. A 19th-century description records a 60-metre-wide rampart, and in 1965 parts still rose 2.5 to 3.5 metres above the marshland. The archaeologist Carl Schuchhardt sketched the earthworks in 1905 and published them in 1916.
No written records survive before 1702, yet local people long called the place Balkenbarg or Balkburg. In 1974 six villages merged to form the modern municipality of Sassenburg, taking the name from the old earthworks. Their coat of arms shows a golden tower above a palisade, echoing an assumed Saxon fortress. Excavations in 2021 uncovered charred timbers and oak posts from a ditch, dated by tree rings to between 957 and 999. For the first time the dig proved the ramparts were real and gave them a firm 11th-century date.
Today the half-moon bank is a low, pine-covered rise dotted with ferns and scattered hollows. The main wall is hard to see beneath dense growth, but a possible outer bailey lies immediately west. Visitors walk quiet sandy paths through the nature reserve, watching the Aller loop past on three sides. The uneven ground still hints at the vanished ramparts, while the river’s edge offers views toward Gifhorn and Wolfsburg.
