Sackpfeife

The Sackpfeife is a forested mountain in the Rothaar range on the border between Waldeck-Frankenberg and Marburg-Biedenkopf in Hesse. It stands just over 673 metres above sea level and rises above its surroundings despite not being the highest peak in the range. The summit area is unusually broad, stretching almost eight kilometres from north-northeast to south-southwest. A minor road links the villages of Hatzfeld-Eifa and Biedenkopf to reach the lower slopes. The mountain sits between Hatzfeld Forest to the north and the town of Biedenkopf to the south.

The mountain is known for the Emperor William II Tower, a viewing structure that offers wide views across the Rothaar highlands. A television transmitter also stands near the summit, broadcasting signals across the region. A ski lift operates on the northern flanks during winter months, serving a small downhill course. The Biedenkopf Municipal Development Company promotes the mountain as the highest point in Marburg-Biedenkopf, even though Waldeck-Frankenberg’s higher summits lie just beyond. The road to the top branches from the B253 and winds through quiet woodland before reaching the open summit.

Visitors reach the broad summit plateau by car or on foot along forest paths. The Emperor William II Tower provides panoramic views over rolling ridges and distant valleys. The transmitter site sits slightly lower on the southern edge, surrounded by antennas and service buildings. In winter, the ski lift carries visitors up the snow-covered slope for downhill runs. The surrounding Hatzfeld Forest offers quiet walking trails through beech and spruce woods. On clear days the outlook stretches as far as the Knüllgebirge and the Vogelsberg.
